Facebook gives users more control and a chat:

Date: 20-3-2008

The US portal Facebook wants to offer its users increased protection for their private data and expand their communication options. According to media reports, the company announced yesterday the addition of new functions to ensure private data protection and an instant messenger for the portal. As of today, face book members should already be able to use various individual filters to specify which of their contacts can see what data.
With the new protection measures, Facebook is introducing a new data protection feature; this time without broad intrusions into user's private data, upsetting them on a massive scale. The company has repeatedly been the subject of criticism in the past for its lackadaisical attitude toward data protection. Users protested, for example, after the introduction of the News Feed, which constantly updated all of a member's contacts on his or her activities. It was not until after widespread protests that face book modified the feature, giving users control over it.

Facebook IM to Rival AOL, Yahoo, Microsoft:

Date: 20-3-2008

Facebook members can soon quit poking, quizzing, and sending useless application requests to one another and begin chatting via instant message. The social-networking site made the announcement Tuesday, saying the feature would be available in two weeks to the community's estimated 67 million members.

Facebook's move to unleash messaging within its vast audience poses a new challenge to AOL, Microsoft, and other makers of instant- messaging services. Facebook’s chat, an imbedded feature within the web site, will likely benefit from its ease of use because it doesn't require a download. This could allow it to better challenge the instant-messaging services offered by AOL, Microsoft, or Yahoo, which require a download.

Paramount's film clips on Facebook:

Date: 11-3-2008

Paramount Pictures will become the first major studio to make clips from thousands of its movies available for use on the internet.
The unit of Viacom Inc is teaming with Los Angeles-based developer FanRocket to launch the VooZoo application on Facebook.

The service gives Facebook users access to footage from thousands of movies, ranging from The Ten Commandments to Forrest Gump, to send to others on the popular social networking site.

"The short clips for a movie that you've already seen before helps you relive the moment," Derek Broes, Paramount senior vice president of entertainment, said.

The clips last from a few seconds to several minutes and cover the gamut from Eddie Murphy's guffaw in Beverly Hills Cop to Audrey Hepburn's pleas over her "no-name slob" cat in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Facebook in Nokia talks:

Date: 21-1-2008

Facebook is negotiating with Nokia over a mobile tool that could see the social networking site built into hundreds of thousands of phone handsets.
The Finland-based mobile firm is said to be exploring ways of promoting a mobile version of Facebook through specific handsets in the same way that YouTube features on Apple's iPhone, website paidContent said today.
Nokia is also reported to be negotiating with Facebook about buying a small stake in the company and an unnamed executive confirmed that "a partnership is in the works".

Both developments would give Facebook a healthy foothold in the mobile market.

Facebook to offer full-fleged iTunes rival?

Date: 3-5-2008

Facebook is investigating the possibility of its own music store, say reported insiders. While the social network recently launched its Music on Facebook service for following artists and buying their music through iTunes, the company is reportedly in talks with major labels to offer content of its own. While no aspects of the deal have been finalized, label officials reportedly say that a deal would most likely include free, ad-backed streaming audio similar to MySpace's profile pages but allow paid MP3 downloads usable on any operating system and portable player.
